Particracy is a political simulation game, played in a web browser. It was started as a hobby project in early 2005. In its first few weeks, it was quite simplistic and crude, as it was hosted on a server at the author's University. The game quickly attracted a modest following of several hundred players, but after a few months growth stalled, basically because the game didn't scale. In early 2006 the author decided to start work on an improved, more complex and better looking version: Particracy II. In the summer of 2008, the game opened up its alpha to a small test audience of some 150 players.
Our intent is to let Particracy II grow beyond what Particracy Classic hhas achieved. More features, a better user experience, multiple game universes, and thereby increased player capacity. To that end the game has been rewritten as a robust software product using modern software development tools and methodologies, and we're renting a new server. There's still a lot of work to do, but we feel the game is shaping up to become something really special.
As it was always our intent to make an experience accessible to anyone interested in politics and strategy gaming, the game is still free. But since servers and development time don't come free, we need a way to support ourselves. To that end, we've placed advertisements on the game site. Since the game is still small, these don't even come close to supporting the cost of hosting the game, let alone developing it. Therefore we are open to discussing any opportunities to make the game commercially viable, such as advertising or other sponsering deals. In the future, we will also consider hosting separate player-managed worlds. In this vein we are also thinking about educational opportunities.
